Celia - Teacher

Celia - Teacher

Celia comes from a background of avid readers and has always been passionate about the outdoors, travel and language and earned her BA in French and Spanish at UWI Cave Hill. Celia hasn't yet realized her dream of becoming an interpreter but she does excel at scuba diving, another one of her passions, and she became certified as a Divemaster enabling her to indulge her love of the water, something she often did growing up on the west coast.

A Level 2 Reiki practitioner, Celia was employed in the Hospitality Industry for many years and has always enjoyed meeting people. Joining the CLC in 2014 was a stroke of good fortune for her. She describes the environment at the school as interesting, stimulating and educational…….and not only for the students.

Celia has provided private tuition for non-English speakers and taught students at various levels of competency in English. When not at the CLC, Celia spends her time creating colourful, organic jewelry from the Tagua nut and being with her family.

Julie - Teacher

Since my first teaching position in 2002 in English as a Foreign Language and Spanish, I have provided instruction for a variety of courses such as the Caribbean Examination Council’s CSEC (Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate) in French and Spanish; Spanish courses from overseas curricula (France and USA); English for Specified Purposes – Medical and Business; one-to-one and mixed nationality classes for adults, juniors and young learners in General English at all levels from beginner to advanced.  I am passionate about providing tailor-made lessons that are motivating, incorporate the use of current technology and are life-applicable.  Having studied several foreign languages myself (i.e. Spanish, French, German and Chinese), I appreciate the challenges that face students and the most effective means of language acquisition.  I love meeting people from all over the world and sharing aspects of my Barbadian and Grenadian heritage with them.

Shana Jones – Instructor of Aviation English and Aviation English for Test and Interview Preparation

Shana Jones – Instructor of Aviation English and Aviation English for Test and Interview Preparation

Shana earned her commercial pilot license, BSc. in Aeronautical Science, and MBA/Aviation at Embry- Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL. Her undergraduate studies included the completion of a minor in Air Traffic Control and an Aircraft Dispatcher’s Certificate. Two years after her master’s degree, she moved to Barbados and secured a DHC-6 Twin Otter first officer position with the Grenadine Air Alliance (GAA). A brief stint at Porter Airlines in Toronto as a DHC-8Q400 first officer followed before she returned to GAA in 2010.

Shana’s journey into the world of ESL instruction started with a volunteer teacher’s assistant position at a local community college while she was doing her master’s degree. When the program ended for the summer, she continued as a group tutor for some of the students. In 2012 (while flying full time) she completed an online TESOL certification course and 10-hour practicum at Centennial College in Toronto, Canada, where she taught college-aged students of various levels and nationalities. Soon after, she landed her first ESL private tutoring job through the Barbados Community College.

In 2017 she embarked on her most fulfilling teaching experience to date: one-on-one ESL instruction through an online platform. With a flexible approach to lesson delivery, she provides specifically tailored ESL lessons covering the 4 core areas of language learning to students from around the world. For her pilot and air traffic control students, her lessons also provide an opportunity to prepare for interviews and aviation English proficiency tests.

Nowadays, she juggles flying, teaching, and other interests such as travel writing and Latin dance, which she often intertwines with her teaching. She embraces every opportunity to contribute to her students’ development as confident English speakers.
