About Barbados

 

Fondly referred to as the gem of the Caribbean, Barbados is the most easterly of the Caribbean islands.

   

           

Situated at latitude 13° 10' N of the equator and longitude 59° 32' west of Greenwich, this coral island is 14 miles wide and 21 miles long. The Atlantic Ocean hugs the eastern side of the island, while the Caribbean Sea lies on the western side. This contrast provides the east coast with a dramatic coastline and rough seas, while the west coast offers white sandy beaches and calm seas.

Terrain:

Barbados is a relatively flat island with the highest point being that of Mount Hillaby which measures 1,089' above sea level.

Weather:

Winter (December to March) the temperature rarely drops below 24°C.

Summer (May to October) the temperature rarely exceeds 29°C.

Capital:

Bridgetown is located in the parish of St Michael on the southwest coast of the island.

Parishes:

The island is divided into 11 parishes: St Michael, Christ Church, St Philip, St John, St Andrew, St Joseph, St Lucy, St Peter, St James, St Thomas and St George.
